Modeling of Magnetic Devices

Foster-Miller offers consulting services for the modeling of magnetic devices using the program "Finite Element Method Magnetics" (FEMM). This program is widely used to create numerical models of equipment such as electric motors, solenoids, transformers, speakers, and magnetic bearings. Several thousand users worldwide employ this analysis tool both in industry and academia.

The full version of the program is available for download free-of-charge from http://femm.foster-miller.net. This site also provides several examples of the program as applied to typical design problems.

Although the program is freely available, considerable skill and experience are required to use it to design superior magnetic devices. We can assist you with the design, analysis, construction, control, and modeling of magnetic devices and electric machines. Our practical experience with a wide variety of applications allows us to provide a level of service reaching far beyond that which is available from traditional finite element vendors.

Two modes of service are available:

  • Annual Retainer. Foster-Miller will be on-call to help you to reduce real-world problems to computational models, automate the analysis of designs that change parametrically, and interpret the results of analyses. In-house experts will also aid you with problems in electronics, controls, thermal analyses, and mechanical design.
  • Per Project. Larger tasks will be contracted on a project-by-project basis. Foster-Miller can provide complete design services, from brainstorming to design to construction of prototype hardware and software. Custom analysis and design tools can also created on a Project basis.
